Yoga: Let’s bust some yoga myths!

Heard of the benefits of yoga but not sure it’s for you? Perhaps you don’t know where or when you could fit it into your busy day?

Let’s bust a few yoga myths (and convince you to give it a go!)

  • Myth: Yoga takes too much time: Yoga doesn’t need to be a two hour long practice. Short, focused sessions can be just as effective and easier to fit into your busy schedule. Just a short, 10 minute stretch, flow or breath practice can help you feel more centered and ready to tackle the rest of your day.

  • Myth: Yoga is only for flexible people: When I started yoga I definitely couldn’t touch my toes! Yoga meets you where you are; whether you are a beginner, have been away from the mat for awhile, or perhaps a seasoned yogi looking to progress. Yoga is about gradual improvement, discovering and challenging yourself along the way.

  • Myth: Yoga is just physical exercise: Whilst yoga can improve your physical strength and flexibility, it also incorporates, breathwork and mindfulness, promoting mental and emotional wellbeing. In particular, yoga is amazing at helping you de-stress and relax at the end of a busy day.

  • Myth: Yoga is too hard: Yoga comes in many styles and intensities. You can find a yoga practice for every part of your day. Want a cardio flow in the morning? How about a calming practice just before bed? I often encourage students to listen to their bodies each day and then decide what suits your energy levels and needs.

  • Myth: You need a yoga studio: Whilst I love a visit to a yoga studio and dream of a dedicated space for my yoga practice at home, in reality, I practice, mainly in my kitchen. Sometimes in my bedroom just before bed. Yoga can be practised anywhere! Just roll out your mat, shut the doors to any chaos and you’ve created your own yoga haven.

  • Myth: Yoga is expensive: You really don’t need any fancy gear or expensive mats to start your yoga practice. A simple mat, comfy clothes, and perhaps a cushion from the sofa and a hardback book as a block, are all you need.
